The Design

The obverse showcases an elegant portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, rendered by Susanna Blunt in 2003. It is the third official depiction of the former Queen on a Canadian coin. Arching Her Majesty’s right profile read: “ELIZABETH II,” and on the bottom, the denomination: “10 DOLLARS.”

One of the most iconic symbols of Canada is featured on the reverse, giving these coins their name: maple leaf. The intricately engraved veins, using micro-engraving technology, run across the leaf to give it a realistic look.

Also engraved on this side are the purity, metal content, and weight of the coin in English and French. The inscriptions read: “CANADA,” “9999 FINE GOLD ¼ OZ OR PUR.”
