2022 ¼ oz Proof Gold Libertads

The Mexican Mint is the oldest in the Americas, and the Libertads are its most successful program. Provided with a vast catalog of products, the Libertad Series has silver and gold coins in brilliant uncirculated and proof versions and several sizes, which vary from the tiny 1/20 oz fractional coin to the heavier 1 oz coin.

With this year's mintage level expected to be similar to last year's limit of just 450 coins, these are not expected to last long!

The Design

The coin’s design celebrates the Mexican Independence and is full of symbolism and patriotism.

The coin's obverse showcases the national seal: The Mexican Coat of Arms. In the image, the eagle, representing the nation, is perching on a prickly cactus while eating a rattlesnake, symbolizing Spanish domination. In a circular format, the words “ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS” sorround the emblem.

The reverse is a depiction of the freedom conquered. The angel portrayed is the Winged Victory, the nation’s feminine personification, which became a monument in Mexico City. On this side, we read the coin’s information: “¼ ONZA ORO PURO,” “LEY .999”, which means ¼ oz .999 fine gold, and the year of mintage.

Proof Finish

Proof coins are those struck with higher quality techniques during the manufacturing process. The dies receive a more detailed polishment, so the blank fields of the coin have a mirror-like luster and the relief gets some contrast against the brilliant background.
