Buy 2022 1/4 oz American Gold Eagle Coins

As the United States Mint releases the American Gold Eagle coins every year, precious metal investors and coin collectors alike flock to these coins like bees to a hive. Ever since the beginning of the program, back in 1986, the United States Mint releases a gold and silver coin of 1 troy ounce, along with fractional ounce sizes for the American Gold Eagle.

Coin Highlights

  • Official gold bullion coin of the United States since 1986;
  • Guaranteed to contain a true gold content of 0.9167 pure 1/4 troy ounce in BU condition;
  • Obverse features the infamous Lady Liberty design, original portrait by Augustus Saint-Gaudens for the Double Eagle gold coin, from 1907 to 1932;
  • Second issue of the new reverse design by Jennie Norris, showing a bald eagle's head;
  • Bears a face value of $10 backed by the US Government.

Design

This coin bears an obverse that is easily recognizable as one of the most iconic designs in coinage history. It was created by Master Engraver Augustus Saint-Gaudens for the $20 gold coin, the Double Eagle. The design was revamped and the fine details polished for the American Gold Eagle bullion coins. But the main parts of the relief remain the same. We see a very traditional depiction of Lady Liberty striding forward with her gowns blowing in the wind. She holds a lit torch, as she guides America to freedom through a path of enlightenment. We can see the Capitol Building on the bottom left. Arching on top of the design is the word “LIBERTY”.

The new reverse design is making its second appearance in the 2022 issue. After decades of no change, the United States Mint announced, back in 2020, the new reverse designs for the gold and silver American Eagles. The design, by graphic designer Jennie Norries, would only debut in the second half of 2021. It shows an eagle’s head, gazing into the horizon. The inscriptions on this verse are the country’s name “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA”, the mottos “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “IN GOD WE TRUST”. The face value, “$10 DOLLARS”, and the precious metal content, “¼ OZ FINE GOLD”, are on the bottom.

Mintage

All coins from the American Gold Eagle series are produced with 22-karat gold (.9167 fine), but the coin is guaranteed to contain ¼ troy ounce of pure gold. The US Mint adds a small portion of silver and copper on top of the whole fine gold content, forming the 22-karat alloy for improved resistance. That actually makes these coins slightly heavier than ¼ troy ounce. It actually weighs 0.2727 troy oz (8.483 g). It has a diameter of 22 mm and a thickness of 1.83 mm. It bears a face value of $10, enjoying legal tender status within the United States of America.

American Gold Eagle Series

The first strike of the American Eagle bullion coins was in 1986. Both the silver and gold, including the fractional sizes, quickly became a symbol of the United States Mint long-running experience in refining precious metals. And because these coins are so popular among investors and coin collectors, they enjoy a high liquidity and could be resold near or even above the spot gold price.

The American Gold Eagle series also includes a 1 troy ounce of gold version, and other two fractional sizes: ½ troy ounce, with a face value of $25, and 1/10 troy ounce, bearing a face value of $5.

The program enjoys so much success in the bullion industry, that in 1997, the US Mint expanded it to include American Platinum Eagle coins, and in 2017, the American Palladium Eagle coins.
