Design

This is the second issue of the new reverse design by graphic designer Jennie Norris. The artist depicted a brilliant head of a bald eagle, with an earnest stare ahead, as to demonstrate the years of experience, passed down from generation to generation of this majestic animal. The inscriptions on the reverse include the country’s name “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA”, and the mottos “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “IN GOD WE TRUST” right below. Under the eagle’s neck feathers, are the artist's initials, “JN”.

As it has been since the inception of the program, the obverse features a modified version of Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ Lady Liberty design, first used on the $20 Double Eagle coin, which was discontinued back in 1933. The Goddess personifies the ideals of freedom and free thought from the Founding Fathers. Her gowns are blowing with the wind, as she holds a lit torch on one hand, and an olive branch on the other. The Capitol Building is seen on the horizon, as rays of sunlight emblazon the scene.

Mintage

The US Mint produces ½ oz American Gold Eagle coins with an alloy of 22-karat gold (.9167 fine). That means they add small amounts of copper and silver to improve the coin’s resistance and hardness. Even so, the silver and copper are added on top of the full ½ troy ounce of pure gold, meaning this coin is slightly heavier and larger than similar coins on the market, such as the ½ Gold Maple Leaf coin. It has a thickness of 2.24 mm and a diameter of 27 mm.
