In 2021, the US Mint celebrated the 35th anniversary of the American Eagle Program, and paying tribute to this landmark, the mint updated the American Silver Eagles' original designs.

An enhanced version of Adolph A. Weinman’s Walking Liberty added details from the original image, which were not possible to implement before the technological advances, including some new anti-counterfeiting measures.

And, a new reverse design, now signed by Emily Damstra, substituted the original John Mercanti’s Heraldic Eagle.

The Design

The obverse Lady Liberty design got a closer version of its original depiction, featuring details that were not possible before.

Lady Liberty still walks toward the sun's rays, enveloped in the American flag, with laurel and oak branches on her left arm and a stretched right arm. 

The inscription “LIBERTY” arches over the image, “IN GOD WE TRUST” is engraved on the right on the right, and the year of mintage is at the bottom. The artist’s initials were added beneath the motto inscription on the lower right.

The new reverse design is a creation of Emily Damstra, which, instead of a Heraldic Eagle, features a more natural Bald Eagle with spread wings landing and carrying an oak branch.

The inscriptions on this side are “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM” right above “1 OZ FINE SILVER,” and “ONE DOLLAR.” 

Mintage

This American Silver Eagle Proof Coin was produced in the San Francisco branch and features the characteristic “S” mintmark on the reverse design.

As a standard for the series, the coin weighs 1 Troy oz of .999 fine silver and is 40,60mm in diameter. It has legal tender status and a USD 1 denomination.

The 2021 update brought security measures, making reeded edge variations to avoid counterfeiting.

Proof coins display mirror-like background surfaces and matte finish design elements due to specially treated planchets and die used in the coinage.

In 2021, the San Francisco Mint struck 247,341 units of American Silver Eagle Proof Coins.

The Mint Box

The coin is housed in an original US Mint box. It consists of a blue velvet, satin-lined presentation case and a Certificate of Authenticity.

The US Mint logo and the primary description of the coin are stamped on the box lid in elegant silver lettering.
