2020-W 1 oz American Silver Eagle Burnished Coin with Box and COA

The 1 oz American Silver Eagle is one of the most iconic silver bullion coins globally, first released by the United States Mint in 1986. 

It contains 1 Troy ounce of 99.9% pure silver, making it a favorite in the numismatic market for its guaranteed weight and metal content.

These US Silver Eagles, in particular, are Burnished coins minted at the West Point branch and bear the “W” mint mark. The blanks used in their making underwent a special treatment process called burnishing, which cleans them from undesired oxides, resulting in a matte finish with more vivid design details.

The Design

The obverse features Lady Liberty folded in the American flag as she walks with an outstretched arm and oak branches in the other.

It also contains the word “LIBERTY” engraved at the top, the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” on the lower right, the “W” West Point mint mark beneath it, and the year of issuance at the bottom rim.

The reverse displays the Heraldic Eagle beneath 13 stars, representing the Thirteen Original Colonies. The Eagle has the National Shield on its chest, arrows and olive branches in its talons, and a banner with "E PLURIBUS UNUM" in its beak. 

The inscribed face value, weight, metal content, and purity information reads "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "1 OZ FINE SILVER," and "ONE DOLLAR." 

Burnished Coins

A Burnished American Eagle Coin results from a “burnishing” process, hence the name. It essentially means that the blanks are cleaned from all oxides formed during the annealing and rimming process. This way, burnished coins get a satin look and a smooth surface but less reflective luster than the Proof version.
