The US Mint introduced American Silver Eagle coins in 1986, and they quickly became a favorite among investors and collectors.

The 2020 edition of American Silver Eagle is the series’ 35th strike.

These are one-ounce coins made of 99.9% fine silver in a proof finish. The designs on both verses of the coin represent some of the core American values and ideals established by the Founding Fathers.

The Design

The Lady Liberty showcased in Adolph A. Weinman’s design in the obverse is a feminine figure walking toward the sun's rays with the American flag draped on her shoulder. She carries oak branches on her left arm and has her right arm stretched, as in a greeting sign.

The inscription “LIBERTY” arches over the image, “IN GOD WE TRUST” is engraved on the right on the right, and the year of mintage is at the bottom.

The reverse design features John Mercanti's original design from 1986. It displays the Heraldic Eagle with spread wings around the star-spangled shield on its chest. 

The Eagle has arrows and olive branches in its talons and carries the “E PLURIBUS UNUM” banner in its beak. Thirteen stars aligned above it represent the Original Thirteen Colonies. 

The words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “1 OZ FINE SILVER,” and “ONE DOLLAR” encircle the image, and they describe the coin’s weight, metal content, and face value.

Mintage

This American Silver Eagle Proof Coin was produced in the San Francisco branch and features the characteristic “S” mintmark on the reverse design.

As a standard for the series, the coin weighs 1 Troy oz of .999 fine silver, has reeded edges, and is 40,60mm in diameter. It has legal tender status and a USD 1 denomination.

Proof coins display mirror-like background surfaces and matte finish design elements due to specially treated planchets and die used in the coinage.

In 2020, the San Francisco Mint struck 208,871 units of American Silver Eagle Proof Coins.

The Mint Box

The coin is housed in an original US Mint box. It consists of a blue velvet, satin-lined presentation case and a Certificate of Authenticity.

The US Mint logo and the primary description of the coin are stamped on the box lid in elegant silver lettering.
