The Design

The obverse features Lady Liberty with the American flag draped on her shoulder, walking toward the sun's rays to welcome new immigrants looking for shelter in the New World.

She carries oak and laurel branches, symbols of abundance and wealth, in her hands. The image has “LIBERTY” inscribed on top, the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and the year of mintage.

On the reverse, the Heraldic Eagle carries the National Shield on its chest, arrows and olive branches on its talons, and a banner with the inscription “E PLURIBUS UNUM” on its beak. Thirteen pointed stars above the Eagle represent the original colonies.

The reverse also contains the “W” mint mark from West Point and the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “1 OZ FINE SILVER,” and “ONE DOLLAR,” describing face value, weight, metal content, and purity.

Because it is a proof coin, its surfaces exhibit a mirror-like luster, which contrasts with the design’s frosted image.
