The Design

The Silver Eagle displays Adolph A. Weinman’s Walking Liberty design, especially rescued for the American Eagle Program from the 1917 Half Dollar coin.

In the image, Lady Liberty walks toward the sun's rays with the American flag draped on her shoulder. She carries oak branches on her left arm while her stretched right arm welcomes new incomers. 

The inscriptions on this side are “LIBERTY” engraved on top, “IN GOD WE TRUST” on the right, and the year of mintage at the bottom.

The reverse design was designed by John Mercanti and showcases the heraldic eagle with spread wings around the star-spangled shield on its chest. 

The eagle carries the “E Pluribus Unum” banner on its beak, arrows, and olive branches on its talons. The thirteen stars aligned above the eagle represent the original colonies. 

The words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “1 OZ FINE SILVER,” and “ONE DOLLAR” encircle the image.

Mintage

This American Silver Eagle Proof Coin was produced in the San Francisco branch and features the characteristic “S” mintmark on the reverse design next to the olive branch carried by the eagle.
