Adhering to President Theodore Roosevelt’s demand, the artist Augustus Saint-Gaudens prepared unique designs for US coins.

Some of those designs were not used. They remain preserved for appreciation only, like this Liberty design, which would be used to stamp 1-cent US coins.

In a limited issue, the National Park Foundation conquered the official license to produce the 1 oz Liberty One Cent Proof Gold Medal and unveil Saint-Gaudens artistry.

The Design

The obverse depicts Lady Liberty’s bust wearing a laurel wreath. Thirteen stars arch over her, representing the Original Colognies, and the word “LIBERTY” is at the bottom.

The reverse features the coin’s face value of “ONE DOLLAR,” initially encircled by the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” then surrounded by a laurel wreath. It also contains the years of creation and issuance “1907-2019.”
