The Royal Canadian Mint, now the official mint of Canada, was established in 1908 to eliminate the dependency on the Royal Mint in London. As of now, two facilities of the mint exist – one in Ottawa and the other in Winnipeg.

The first Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coin was launched in 1979 with the aim of unseating the Gold Krugerrand, which was the only bullion gold coin in the world at the time. Its rise to fame and popularity was rapid, and it has now become a yardstick by which every other gold bullion product is still measured.

An elegant portrait of Queen Elizabeth II graces the obverses of these coins. Created by Susanna Blunt in 2003, the image depicts Her Majesty's right profile beautifully and is the fourth depiction of the Queen on a Canadian coin.
