A special themed proof gold medal was issued in 2017 to celebrate the 50 years of the National Park Foundation, which dates back to 1967.

It consists of a 1 Troy oz medal made from 99.9% fine gold that portrays President Theodore Roosevelt.

President Roosevelt played a crucial role in natural preservation issues. He is acknowledged as the founder of the National Parks System and the pioneer in creating protected areas designated as National Parks.

The Design

That obverse was inspired by Alexander Proctor's famous Rough Rider statue, located in the South Park Blocks of Portland. It depicts President Theodore Roosevelt on horseback.

Thirteen stars, along with the word “LIBERTY,” arch over the image, while the inscriptions “THEODORE ROOSEVELT,” “SAINT-GAUDENS,” and “NHS.”

The reverse showcases the American Bison, or Buffalo, against a detailed landscape. The engravings read “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM.”
