The Design

Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ obverse design portrays Lady Liberty wearing a headdress made of feathers engraved with the word “LIBERTY,” representing the Native American heritage. Thirteen five-pointed stars arch over the effigy, representing the Original Colonies.

The reverse depicts a flying Bald Eagle with sun rays shining on the backdrop. The inscriptions on this side read “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “DOUBLE EAGLE.”
