2016 PCGS MS-69 DMPL First Strike 5 oz America The Beautiful Silver 5-Coin Set

The US Mint manufactured quarter-dollar coins for the America The Beautiful Quarter Program from 2010 to 2021. The series comprises not only circulating clad quarters, but also fifty-six coins weighing 5 Troy oz of 99.9% fine silver, imprinted with America’s most iconic monuments, forests, and parks, in a unique reverse design at each strike.

In 2016, the series paid homage to the Shawnee National Forest, the Cumberland Gap National Historical Park, the Harpers Ferry National Historical Park, the Theodore Roosevelt National Park, and the Fort Moultrie, or Fort Sumter National Monument.

Today, SD Bullion sells the 2016 America The Beautiful Silver 5-Coin Set which gathers these five alluring silver coins. They were purchased from the US Mint within 30 days of their official release and individually graded by PCGS as MS-69 DMPL coins.

  • All coins were evaluated, encapsulated, and graded as an MS-69 DMPL coin by PCGS;

The Obverse Design

The standard obverse design portrays George Washington's bust, signed by John Flanagan in 1932. This design is inspired by the official effigy of the former President created by William Cousins in 1786.

The design also features the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “QUARTER DOLLAR.”

The Shawnee Reverse Design

It offers a close-up view of Camel Rock with natural vegetation in the foreground and a red-tailed hawk flying above the rocks. Inscriptions on this side read “SHAWNEE,” “ILLINOIS,” “2016,” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM.”

The Cumberland Gap Reverse Design

It depicts a frontiersman gazing across the mountains to the West and the inscription “FIRST DOORWAY TO THE WEST.” The engravings on the outer rim read "CUMBERLAND GAP," "KENTUKY," "2016," and "E PLURIBUS UNUM."

The Harpers Ferry Reverse Design

The reverse features John Brown Fort, where John Brown last stayed during his raid on the Harpers Ferry Armory. Inscriptions on this side are “HARPERS FERRY,” “WEST VIRGINIA,” “2016,” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM.”

The Theodore Roosevelt Reverse Design

It showcases Theodore Roosevelt on horseback with the Little Missouri River, also known as the "Rough Rider," serving as a backdrop. The inscriptions accompanying the image read “THEODORE ROOSEVELT,” “NORTH DAKOTA,” “2016,” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM.”

The Fort Moultrie Reverse Design

The reverse shows Sergeant William Jasper returning the regimental flag to the ramparts amid an attack from a British ship.

The inscriptions accompanying the image read “FORT MOULTRIE,” “SOUTH CAROLINA,” “2016,” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM.”

A PCGS MS-69 DMPL “First Strikes” Coin

Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) works independently of sovereign mints. It evaluates and grades coins using the Sheldon Grading Scale, which rates coins from 1 to 70 according to their condition.

PCGS calls “First Strikes” the coins purchased from the original mint within the first 30 days of the official release and submitted to its appraisal.

MS stands for Mint State. Mint State coins are shaped as business coins. Grade 69 is attributed to coins whose flaws are almost invisible.

According to PCGS, DMPL stands for Deep Mirror Proof-Like and refers to coins struck for circulation but with unusual mirror-like fields and frosted design details that are very similar to Proof coins.
