The Shawnee Silver Coin was the first coin released in 2016 and the 31st in the America The Beautiful Quarter Program.

The US Mint manufactured quarter-dollar coins for the America The Beautiful Quarter Program from 2010 to 2021. The series comprises fifty-six coins weighing 5 Troy oz of 99.9% fine silver, imprinted with America’s most iconic monuments, forests, and parks, in a unique reverse design at each strike.

Shawnee National Forest is located in Illinois and became a national site in 1939. It contains the largest natural area in Illinois and includes two National Scenic Byways: the Ohio River and the Great River Road. The forest features some of the largest and most diverse sections of mature hardwoods and interior forest habitats among national forests.

The Design

On the obverse, John Flanagan depicts George Washington's effigy, created in 1932. The depiction follows the 1786 former President’s official portrayal designed by William Cousins.

The reverse offers a close-up view of Camel Rock with natural vegetation in the foreground and a red-tailed hawk flying above the rocks. Inscriptions on this side read “SHAWNEE,” “ILLINOIS,” “2016,” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM.”
