The Design

The obverse showcases Lady Liberty, the feminine national guise designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, marching forward, carrying a torch and an olive branch, representing national progress, light, and peace. 

The word “LIBERTY,” the year of issuance, and the US Capitol Building complete the design.

The reverse is stamped with Miley Busiek’s illustration of a family of Bald Eagles, which features a female Bald Eagle cherishing her hatchling under her wing while the male Eagle perches their nest. 

It displays the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and the mottos “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “IN GOD WE TRUST.” The coin’s weight, metal content, and face value are at the bottom, and it reads: “1/2 OZ. FINE GOLD—25 DOLLARS.”

An NGC MS-70 Coin

Like similar third-party grading services, NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Company) appraises and grades coins according to the Sheldon Scale, which ranges from 1 to 70 based on the coin’s condition.

The term MS or Mint State corresponds to a piece with the same format as a widespread circulation coin that remained uncirculated. Grade 70 is given to flawless coins.
