2014-W NGC MS-70 Early Releases 1 oz American Gold Eagle Burnished Coin - Statue of Liberty Label
Gold Eagles were introduced in the bullion market in 1986 as the American Eagle Program debuting coins.
The premiere sample is 22-karat gold coins weighing 1 Troy oz of actual gold content, Imprinted with patriotic designs signed by Augustus Saint-Gaundens and Miley Busiek. The US Mint quickly widened the series to add fractional options and varied finishes, including a burnished option.
Burnished Gold Eagles undergo a special treatment process that polishes the blanks and cleans them from undesired oxides. That results in a matte appearance with more vivid design details.
These burnished coins were purchased from the US Mint during the first 30 of public availability and carry the “W” mint mark, identifying the West Point branch as the mint that issued them.
At SD Bullion, 2014-W 1 oz Burnished American Gold Eagles, graded as MS-70 Early Releases samples sealed in NGC slabs with the Exclusive Statue of Liberty Label, are available for purchase now.

The Design

The design also imprints the Capitol Building, the word “LIBERTY,” and the coin’s mintage year. The “W” mint mark is on the right.
On the reverse, Busiek features a female eagle cherishing its hatchling under her wing while the male perches their nest.
The design also contains the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and the mottos “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “IN GOD WE TRUST,” “1 OZ. FINE GOLD—50 DOLLARS” referring to weight, metal content, and face value.
Burnished Coins
A Burnished American Eagle Coin results from a “burnishing” process, hence the name. It essentially means that the blanks are cleaned from all oxides formed during the annealing and rimming process. This way, burnished coins get a satin look and a smooth surface but less reflective luster than Proof American Eagles.
An NGC MS-70 Coin
The Sheldon Grading Scale is used as a parameter by NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Company) to evaluate and attribute grades to coins.
MS stands for Mint State, indicating a coin crafted in the format of a business circulation coin. Since it has never been in circulation, the coin has no sign of wear, tear, or scratching, which grants it a 70 grade.
NGC considers “Early Releases” the coins purchased and taken to its evaluation within the first 30 days of public release by the US Mint.
