Since the inception of the American Eagles Program in 1986, the US Mint has consistently produced Silver Eagle coins in both bullion and proof variations each year. 

Notably, Silver Eagle Proof coins exhibit a distinct mirror-like luster, setting them apart from standard bullion counterparts. These Proof Silver Eagles contain one troy ounce of 99.9% fine silver, bear a face value of USD 1, and hold legal tender status.

The Design

John Mercanti’s Heraldic Eagle, depicted on the reverse side, has thirteen stars above its head, representing the Thirteen Original Colonies. The National Shield lies on its chest, arrows and olive branches on its talons, and a banner with the inscription “E PLURIBUS UNUM” on its beak. 

The information regarding face value, weight, metal content, and purity surrounds the image. It reads “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “1 OZ FINE SILVER,” and “ONE DOLLAR.” 

Adolph A. Weinman’s Walking Liberty from the obverse showcases Lady Liberty with the American flag draped on her shoulder, oak and laurel branches in one arm, and the other stretched in a welcome sign.

The design also features the inscriptions “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and the year of issuance.

Because it is a proof coin, its surfaces exhibit a mirror-like luster, which contrasts with the design’s frosted image.

A PCGS PR-69 Coin 

PCGS, which stands for Professional Coin Grading Service, operates like other third-party entities in appraising and grading coins. They utilize the Sheldon Scale, a grading system ranging from 1 to 70, to evaluate coins based on their condition.

According to the scale, PR stands for Proof Coin, indicating a coin produced for collection purposes, which exhibits mirror-like surfaces in contrast with frosted design elements. 69 is the grade attributed to coins whose flaws are almost invisible.
