The Design

The obverse reproduces James Earl Fraser's portrayal of a Native American Chief, which features a right-facing profile melding elements from various Native American tribes: the Big Tree, Iron Tail, and Two Moons. 

The image includes the inscription "LIBERTY" above the Chief's forehead, the year of minting, and an "F" representing the artist's initials.

The reverse stamps the American Bison, whose resemblance with a Buffalo names the coin. Engravings adorn the design, reading "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "E PLURIBUS UNUM," "IN GOD WE TRUST," "$50," and "1 OZ .9999 FINE GOLD," denoting the coin's denomination, weight, purity, and metal content, respectively.
