The America the Beautiful Quarter Program includes 56 quarter-dollar coins produced by the US Mint from 2010 to 2021. 

Five silver coins, each weighing 5 troy ounces of 99.9% fine silver, were struck with unique reverse designs featuring iconic American parks, monuments, or forests each year. 

The Shenandoah Silver Coin, the second release of the 2014 edition and 22nd in the series, represents Shenandoah National Park in Virginia, located 75 miles from Washington, D.C.

Authorized in 1926 and officially established in 1935, the park was dedicated by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1936. It features cascading waterfalls, stunning vistas, and tranquil wooded hollows.

The Design

The obverse features George Washington's bust, designed by John Flanagan in 1932, based on William Cousins' 1786 depiction of the former President.

The reverse shows a day hiker viewing from the Little Stony Man summit, encircled by "SHENANDOAH," "VIRGINIA," "E PLURIBUS UNUM," and "2014."

Burnished Coins

A Burnished Coin results from a “burnishing” process, hence the name. It essentially means that the blanks are cleaned from all oxides formed during the annealing and rimming process. This way, burnished coins get a satin look and a smooth surface but less reflective luster than the Proof version.
