The Design

The coin's reverse displays an American Bison, its upright left-facing profile resembling a buffalo. The bison is surrounded by key inscriptions: across the top are the phrases “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and the national motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM.” 

Near the bison’s muzzle appears “IN GOD WE TRUST,” while beneath the image, the inscriptions “$50” and “1 OZ. .9999 FINE GOLD” denote the coin’s face value, weight, purity, and gold content.

The obverse showcases a right-facing portrait of a Native American Chief, a modern interpretation of James Earle Fraser’s original design for the 1913 Indian Head Nickel. 

This composite portrait draws features from three real-life tribal leaders: Big Tree, Iron Tail, and Two Moons. The word “LIBERTY” is engraved in front of the forehead, while the date of mintage and the initial “F,” Fraser’s signature, appear in the lower left.

Because it is a reverse proof coin, its surface has a frosted aspect, while the images engraved over it are oppositely bright. That makes design details more vivid and perceptible against the matte background.
