2013-P NGC SP-69 PL Early Releases 5 oz America The Beautiful Great Basin Burnished Silver Coin
The US Mint manufactured silver coins for the America The Beautiful Quarter Program from 2010 to 2021. It consists of 56 five-ounce silver coins stamped with America’s most emblematic parks, monuments, and forests.
The Great Basin Silver Coin is the third strike of the 2013 edition and the 18th in the series.
Great Basin National Park in Nevada was stated as a national site in 1922. The park is an oasis in the desert with over 40 miles of perennial streams and 400 springs. It contains various cultural resources dating back to prehistoric times and structures and sites related to mining, western surveys, and ranching. It includes Lehman Caves, the most heavily decorated limestone solution caverns in the west of the U.S., and Wheeler Peak, the second-highest peak in Nevada.
These particular coins are burnished samples. They carry the “P” mint mark, indicating they were issued by the Philadelphia Mint and were purchased from the US Mint within the first 30 days of their official release.

The Design
The obverse features George Washington's left-profile bust, designed by John Flanagan in 1932, inspired by the former President’s official portrayal created by William Cousins in 1786.
It contains the engravings “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “QUARTER DOLLAR.” The “P” mint mark is on the lower right.
The reverse shows a lone Bristlecone Pine tree amidst the rocky glacial moraines where these trees thrive. Found at higher elevations in the park, these trees are among the oldest in the world. Some of them are over 4,000 years old.
The engravings read “GREAT BASIN,” “NEVADA,” “2013,” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM.”
Burnished Coins
A Burnished Coin results from a “burnishing” process, hence the name. It essentially means that the blanks are cleaned from all oxides formed during the annealing and rimming process. This way, burnished coins get a satin look and a smooth surface but less reflective luster than the Proof version.
An NGC SP-69 Early Releases Coin
NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Company) is globally renowned for appraising and certifying coins according to the Sheldon Scale, which ranks coins from 1 to 70.
SP-69 stands for Specimen-69, which describes a hybrid between Mint State and Proof with nearly imperceptible imperfections.
PL refers to a Proof-like finish, describing coins that exhibit mirrored fields that resemble Proof coins but are bullion coins.
NGC considers “Early Releases” a coin purchased from its original mint within the first 30 days of its public release.
