2013 2 oz Year of the Snake Gold Coin - Lunar Series
The 2013 2 oz Year of the Snake Gold Coin - Lunar Series is part of the Perth Mint's second Lunar Series gold coins. The first Gold Lunar Series was issued from 1996 to 2007, and the Lunar Series II was issued from 2008 through 2019, concluding in 2019 with the Year of the Pig. Each Lunar Series features animals according to the Chinese Lunar Calendar, making each new release an exciting addition. 2013 marks the Year of the Snake, and because the Chinese Lunar Year Calendar has 12 different animals, the Year of the Snake will not return until 2025.
The Perth Mint is the brilliant creator behind this series. The Perth Mint has been in operations for longer than Australia itself. While Australia did not obtain independence from Great Britain until 1901, the Perth Mint was founded in 1899 as a subsidiary of the British Royal Mint. Over the many years of its existence, the Perth Mint has continued to produce popular bullion products, such as the Australian Kangaroo struck in silver, gold, and platinum.

The obverse of each coin depicts a snake coiled up among bamboo grass, ready to prowl on its prey. To the snake's left is the Chinese symbol associated with the year of the snake and the Perth Mint’s “P” mintmark that is found on all of their coins. The title of the coin, “Year of the Snake,” is located on the bottom half of the coin.
The iconic profile picture of a youthful Queen Elizabeth is found in the center of the coin's reverse. The words "ELIZABETH II," "AUSTRALIA," "200 DOLLARS," "2013," and "2 OZ 9999 GOLD” surround the effigy.
