The US Mint introduced the America The Beautiful collection to the numismatic world in 2010. Until 2021, the series delivered 5 five-ounce silver coins imprinted with America’s most emblematic sites, accounting for 56 silver coins.

The  Gettysburg  Silver Coin was the first coin released in 2011 and the sixth overall in the America the Beautiful Quarters Program.

Gettysburg Military National Park is located in Pennsylvania and houses the 72nd Pennsylvania Infantry Monument. It marks the Union Army's battle line in the Battle of Gettysburg, a turning point in the Civil War. 

These particular coins were purchased from the US Mint within the first 30 days of their official release and exhibit a proof-like finish.

The Design

The obverse displays George Washington's bust, designed by John Flanagan in 1932. This design is inspired by the official effigy of the former President created by William Cousins in 1786.

It also features the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “QUARTER DOLLAR.” 

The reverse showcases the Gettysburg National Monument, which commemorates the infamous Civil War battle and President Abraham Lincoln's famous address in 1863 at Gettysburg’s Soldiers National Cemetery. 

Inscriptions on this side read “GETTYSBURG,” “PENNSILVANYA,” “2011,” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM.”

An NGC MS-69 PL “Early Releases” Coin

NGC - Numismatic Guaranty Company is internationally recognized for appraising and grading coins using the Sheldon Grading Scale, which ranks coins from 1 to 70 based on their condition.
