2010 NGC SP-70 Early Releases 5 oz America the Beautiful Yosemite Burnished Silver Coin
The U.S. Mint introduced the America The Beautiful Quarter Program in 2010, featuring a unique five-ounce silver coin collection celebrating America’s natural wonders and rich heritage.
The Yosemite Silver Coin was the third release of 2010 and the third release in the America the Beautiful Quarters Program.
Yosemite National Park, one of the earliest wilderness parks in the United States, is famous for its stunning waterfalls. Located in California, it was designated a national preservation site in 1890 and spanned nearly 1,200 square miles, encompassing deep valleys, vast meadows, and ancient giant sequoias.
These specific coins are burnished samples purchased from the US Mint within the first 30 days of their official release and submitted to NGC appraisal.

The Design
The obverse portrays George Washington designed by John Flanagan in 1932. It is an inspired version of the former President’s official portrayal illustrated by William Cousins in 1786.
It also contains the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “QUARTER DOLLAR.”
The reverse features El Capitan, which rises more than 3,000 feet above the valley floor and is the largest monolith of granite in the world. Accompanying Inscriptions read “YOSEMITE,” “CALIFORNIA,” “2010,” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM.”
Burnished Coins
A Burnished Coin results from a “burnishing” process, hence the name. It essentially means that the blanks are cleaned from all oxides formed during the annealing and rimming process. This way, burnished coins get a satin look and a smooth surface but less reflective luster than the Proof version.
An NGC SP-70 Early Releases Coin
NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Company) is globally renowned for appraising and certifying coins according to the Sheldon Scale, which ranks coins from 1 to 70.
SP-70 stands for Specimen-70, which describes a hybrid between Mint State and Proof with absolutely no imperfections.
NGC considers “Early Releases” a coin purchased from its original mint within the first 30 days of its official release.
