2009 (MMIX) NGC/PCGS MS-69 Ultra High Relief $20 Double Eagle Coin
The $20 St. Gaudens Double Eagle is one of the most iconic gold coins ever produced by the U.S. Mint.
Introduced in 1907 during Theodore Roosevelt's presidency, the coin was designed for everyday circulation. It had a $20 face value. However, due to the economic fallout from the 1929 Wall Street crash, its production abruptly halted in 1933.
In 2009, the U.S. Mint reimagined this historic coin as a special, limited-edition release. The modern version featured 24-karat gold purity and an Ultra-High Relief design, elevating its aesthetic and craftsmanship to new heights while honoring its timeless legacy.
At SD Bullion, you can acquire the 2009 (MMIX) $20 Double Eagle Ultra High Relief Coin, sealed in either NGC or PCGS slabs and graded as an MS-69 coin, randomly selected in our inventory according to our availability.

The Design
The obverse showcases Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ Double Eagle design. In it, Lady Liberty marches forward to symbolize national progress, carrying a torch and olive branch representing enlightenment and peace. The sun's rays are rising in the background.
It includes the Capitol Building on the lower left, the word “LIBERTY” on top, the year of issuance written in Roman letters on the lower right, and the stars encircling the whole design, representing the states.
The reverse portrays a flying Bald Eagle, accompanied by the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “TWENTY DOLLARS.”
The 2009 Edition
In the 2009 edition, the original Saint-Gaudens design was digitally mapped and imprinted in ultra-high relief, creating a 3-D effect on the design elements making the most intricate details even more noticeable.
In addition, some design elements were included. The year of issuance in Roman letters reflects the year of mintage (2009), four stars were added to complete the current 50 states, and the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” is now at the bottom of the reverse design.
An NGC or PCGS MS-69 Coin
PCGS—Professional Coin Grading Service—and NGC—Numismatic Guaranty Company work independently from sovereign mints, appraising and grading coins according to the Sheldon Grading Scale.
For both services, an MS-Mint State designation means that a particular coin has the same format as a business coin, which remained uncirculated. Grade 69 is attributed to almost perfect coins with unnoticeable flaws.
