With a mintage of just 49,802 coins, these 2009 1 oz Canadian Thunderbird Gold Coins were struck by the Royal Canadian Mint to commemorate the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics and are relatively hard to come by. SD Bullion offers Superb Gem BU specimens of these coins, graded and sealed in a plastic slab by PCGS (Professional Coin Grading Service).


Each of these gold coins contains 1 troy ounce of 0.9999 pure gold. Moreover, they are assigned legal tender status in Canada with a face value of $50 (CAD).


The Thunderbird is a legendary creature in the North American Natives’ culture and history; it is considered a being of power and strength. Totem poles with the Thunderbird depiction can be found throughout North America. These coins’ reverses feature the Thunderbird totem, with eleven maple leaves swirling around it. The purity and weight of the gold used to strike this coin, i.e. ‘.9999 FINE GOLD 1 OZ,’ are also imprinted on this side.


On the obverse sides, the familiar right profile portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II is displayed. The mascot for the Winter Olympics 2010 is emblazoned to the left of the Queen’s portrayal.
