The Australian Perth Mint Lunar Series is a yearly release that features a wide range of coins in accordance along with the Chinese calendar. In 2002, the year of the horse began the 7th year in a 12 year cycle according to Chinese mythology. The order of the animals in the years is said to be the order they crossed the river in a Chinese legend. The limited-production Lunar Coin series started in 1996 and there are now three sets of the series that are in circulation, with this 2002 1 oz Year of the Horse Gold Coin being part of its first series.

The Australian Perth Mint is fully owned by the Government of Western Australia and was established in June of 1899. This mint has struck many popular coins, including the Australian Silver Koala coins, the Australian Lunar series, and the Australian Silver Kookaburra. The Perth Mint represents about 10 percent of the global production of coins and bars and is Australia’s third and only remaining branch of Britain’s Royal Mint.

On the obverse of the coin, there is listed the words “ Elizabeth II”, “Australia”, and 100 Dollars”. These words surround the bust of Queen Elizabeth II and underneath her is a mark from the engraver.

The reverse features a horse running through grass. This is accompanied by the year, purity and weight on this side of the coin.
