Silver Eagles are the official silver coin of the United States. The US Mint releases both a bullion version for investors and a proof counterpart intended for collectors. They have the same features - one troy ounce of 99.9% fine silver, a face value of USD 1, and legal tender - but with a unique mirror-like luster due to the proof finish.

In 2000, the US Mint issued 600,743 Proof Silver Eagles in total.

The Design

The Heraldic Eagle, depicted on the reverse side, was created by John Mercanti and has thirteen stars above its head, representing the Thirteen Original Colonies. The National Shield lies on its chest, arrows and olive branches on its talons, and a banner with the inscription “E PLURIBUS UNUM” on its beak. 

The inscriptions regarding face value, weight, metal content, and purity encircle the image reading “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “1 OZ FINE SILVER,” and “ONE DOLLAR.” 

The obverse that features Adolph A. Weinman’s Walking Liberty showcases Lady Liberty with the American flag draped on her shoulder, oak and laurel branches in one arm, and the other stretched in a welcome sign.

The inscriptions on this side read “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and the year of issuance.

Because it is a proof coin, its surfaces exhibit a mirror-like luster, which contrasts with the design’s frosted image.

A PCGS PR-69 Coin 

PCGS, which stands for Professional Coin Grading Service, appraises and grades coins using the Sheldon Scale, a grading system ranging from 1 to 70.

According to the scale, PR stands for Proof Coin, indicating a coin produced for collection purposes, which exhibits mirror-like surfaces in contrast with frosted design elements. 69 is the grade attributed to coins whose flaws are almost invisible.
