The Design
In Gobrecht’s design, Lady Liberty’s portrait is a left-profile bust, wearing a coronet inscribed “LIBERTY.” The stars encircling her face represent the Thirteen Original Colonies, and the year of mintage is engraved at the bottom.
The Heraldic Eagle showcased on the reverse has outstretched wings, the national shield on its chest, arrows, and an olive branch on its talons.
The inscriptions on this side are limited to the nation’s name and the coin’s face value.
