The Design
Sculptor Bela Lyon Pratt, an Augustus Saint-Gaudens student, created the Indian Quarter Eagle design, which displays the left-profile bust of a Native American Chief wearing a full headdress on the obverse side.
The image is supplemented by the word “LIBERTY,” the year of issuance, and thirteen five-pointed stars representing the Thirteen Original Colonies.
The reverse design features the Bald Eagle perched on an arrow wrapped around an olive branch.
The Eagle is flanked by “E PLURIBUS UNUM” on the left and “IN GOD WE TRUST” on the right. The words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” are engraved on top, and the coin’s face value of “2 ½ DOLLARS” is at the bottom rim.
