1996 represents the first landmark of the American Eagle Program in the numismatic world. It refers to the 10th strike of Gold Eagles, the US’ official gold bullion coin.

The program's debuting gold coin was a 22k gold piece containing 1 Troy oz of fine gold, with a significant design encompassing the Founding Fathers' core values.

The collection's addition of fractional options happened a little after its release in 1986. The 1/10 oz Gold Eagle is the smallest option, with a 5-dollar denomination and legal tender status.

The Design

The obverse design was rescued from the 1907 $20 Double Eagle Gold Coin.

Augustus Saint-Gauden designed Lady Liberty striding forward with a torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other. It symbolizes the nation's journey toward peace and enlightenment. 

The design also includes the Capitol Building, the word “LIBERTY,” and the coin’s mintage year.

The reverse displays Miley Busiek's artwork. It showcases a female eagle protecting her hatchling beneath her wing while the male eagle watches from their nest. 

Weight, metal content, and face value are inscribed as “1/10 OZ. FINE GOLD—5 DOLLARS,” along with “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” and “IN GOD WE TRUST.”
