American Gold Eagles are made from 22k gold. They are imprinted with Augustus Saint-Gaudens’s Lady Liberty design and a family of bald eagles created by Miley Busiek. 

The 1/4 US Gold Eagle is legal tender with a USD 10 face value. In 1987, the US Mint delivered 269,255 units of 1/4 oz Gold Eagles to the bullion market.

The Design

The obverse portrays Lady Liberty striding forward, holding a torch and an olive branch. It includes the word "LIBERTY," the Capitol Building, and the coin’s mintage year. The coin reflects the national journey toward progress, peace, and enlightenment. 

The reverse depicts a family of Bald Eagles: a female eagle nurturing her hatchling under her wing while the male stands guard on their nest. 

The accompanying inscriptions read “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” the mottos “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” and “IN GOD WE TRUST.” The description of weight, metal content, and face value reads “1/4 OZ. FINE GOLD—10 DOLLARS.”
