The obverse presents the Imperial Eagle of Austria. The eagle proudly wears the national shield of Austria representing the nation. This coat of arms is reminiscent of the Hapsburg’s dynasty seal as well as the Aquila, a symbol in Ancient Rome portraying an eagle. Above the eagle “REPUBLIK OSTERREICH” is spelled out and below the denomination lies, “Schilling 1000”.
The reverse depicts the seal of the Duke Frederick II, the Duke of Austria as well as a military leader before he died in battle in 1211, simultaneously ending the rule of the House of Babenberg. He is depicted on the coin upon horseback charging valiantly forward with a spear and flag in hand. Above him are years from the to the 1000th anniversary of the start of the Babenberg dynasty, “976 - 1976” and below him is struck “Einsetzung der Babenberger” translating to Babenberg Dynasty.
