1946-S NGC MS-65 Walking Liberty Half Dollar Coin

The Walking Liberty coin was the official U.S. half-dollar from 1916 to 1947. 

Composed of a silver copper alloy, it showcased Adolph A. Weinman’s famous Walking Liberty design. Years later, this iconic artwork was revived for the American Eagle Program and serves as the official obverse of U.S. Silver Eagles.

These half-dollar coins, which carry the “S” mint mark, were issued by the San Francisco Mint as part of the 1946 edition.

The Design

The obverse features Lady Liberty striding toward the rising sun, enveloped in the American flag. She holds oak and laurel branches in one arm while her other hand extends in a welcoming gesture. 

The word "LIBERTY" is inscribed above her, the motto"IN GOD WE TRUST" is on the lower right, and the minting year is displayed at the bottom.

On the reverse, a Bald Eagle stands on a rock with its wings poised for flight, clutching oak branches in its talons. The engraving "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" is inscribed at the top, the motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM" appears on the left, and the denomination "HALF DOLLAR" is placed below the eagle.

The “S” mint mark from the San Francisco Mint is also present.
