1908-D NGC MS-63 $20 St. Gauden Double Eagle Gold Coin No Motto

The US Mint introduced the $20 St. Gaudens Double Eagle Gold Coins in 1907 to replace the previous $20 circulating coin, the $20 Liberty Double Eagle Coin.

The first $20 St. Gaudens Double Eagle Gold Coins issued in 1907 and mid-1908 do not showcase the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” on the reverse design and are known as “No Motto.”

And those issued in Denver, one of the US Mint branches, bear the “D” mint mark.

The Design

The obverse showcases Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ Lady Liberty design, in which Lady Liberty marches forward, representing national development. Her torch means enlightenment, and the olive branch is a peace symbol. 

The Capitol Building is discreetly imprinted on the lower left, the word “LIBERTY” arches over the image while the sun's rays work as a backdrop, and the year of issuance is on the right.

In the reverse design, the bald eagle flies toward the sun. The inscriptions on this side are on top and read “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “TWENTY DOLLARS.”

An NGC MS-63 Coin

NGC stands for Numismatic Guaranty Company. It is an internationally recognized third-party service that works independently from sovereign mints to appraise and grade coins based on the Sheldon Grading Scale.

MS stands for Mint State, indicating a coin produced in a business circulation sample format that remained uncirculated. Grade 63 indicates that the coin may present marks and minor visible hairlines but still have an attractive overall appearance.
