The Design

Christian Gobrecht, the third Chief Engraver of the US Mint, designed both sides of the $10 Liberty Eagle Gold Coin.

On the obverse depiction, Lady Liberty wears a coronet engraved with the word “LIBERTY.” Her bust is encircled by Thirteen stars, representing the Thirteen Original Colonies and the year of mintage.

The Heraldic Eagle, from the reverse, carries the national shield on its chest, arrows and oak branches on its talons, and the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” inscribed on a banner above the eagle. 

The words encircling the image read “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “TEN D.” referring to the coin’s face value.
