The U.S. Mint produced Liberty Double Eagles for circulation as the official $20 coin from 1850 to 1907. Each coin contains .9675 Troy ounces of gold and showcases James B. Longacre’s design. 

During the economic turmoil of the 1930s, many pre-1933 gold coins, including the $20 Liberty Double Eagle, were confiscated, hoarded, and melted for their gold content. This significantly reduced their availability within the numismatic community.

The Design

The obverse depicts Lady Liberty’s bust wearing a tiara engraved with “LIBERTY.” Thirteen six-pointed stars encircle her effigy, representing the Thirteen Original Colonies and the year of mintage.

On the reverse, the Heraldic Eagle has spread wings, the national shield in front of its chest, arrows in its talons, and the banner “E PLURIBUS UNUM” in its beak. 

Additional engravings refer to the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and the coin’s face value of “TWENTY DOLLARS.”
