1903 NGC MS-66 $2.50 Liberty Quarter Eagle Gold Coin

The Liberty Quarter Eagle Coin served as the US's official $2.50 circulating coin from 1840 to 1907. 

They are featured with 0.12094 troy ounces of gold and a remarkable design signed by Christian Gobrecht that holds the record for the longest unchanged design in American gold coinage history. 

Like other pre-1933 gold coins, many $2.50 Liberty Half Eagles vanished during the economic downturn of the 1930s. As gold prices increased, these coins were confiscated, hoarded, and melted down for their gold content.

The Design

The obverse showcases Lady Liberty facing left, wearing a coronet inscribed "LIBERTY." This image is surrounded by thirteen six-pointed stars representing the Thirteen Original Colonies, with the year of mintage at the bottom. 

The reverse features the Heraldic Eagle with outstretched wings, bearing the national shield on its chest and holding arrows and an olive branch in its talons. The inscriptions include only the nation’s name and the coin’s face value.

NGC - Numismatic Guaranty Company is an independent third-party service that uses the Sheldon Grading Scale to appraise and grade coins according to their condition. The scale ranks coins from 1 to 70.

MS stands for mint state. It refers to a coin struck in the same format as a business circulation coin that remained uncirculated. Grade 66 indicates the coin may have contact marks and signs of wear and tear, but it is above average in quality of strike and preserved original mint luster.
