1901 PCGS MS-63 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin - Granite Lady Hoard

From 1850 to 1907, the official $20 circulating coin of the United States was the Liberty Double Eagle. Minted by the US Mint, each coin contains .9675 Troy oz of gold and features a design by James B. Longacre, the Mint’s fourth Chief Engraver.

These particular coins are sealed with a PCGS Special Granite Lady Hoard Label, a tribute to the second San Francisco Mint building, constructed in 1874 during the California Gold Rush. 

Known as the “Granite Lady” for its durable, two-story granite structure, the facility was built to support the growing need for gold refining and the weight of large minting machinery.

The Design

The obverse portrays Lady Liberty, who wears a tiara engraved with “LIBERTY.” Her effigy is surrounded by the thirteen six-pointed stars that refer to the Thirteen Original Colonies and the year of mintage.

The reverse illustrates the Heraldic Eagle with spread wings, the national shield in front of its chest, arrows in its talons, and the banner “E PLURIBUS UNUM” in its beak. 

It also contains the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and the coin’s face value of “TWENTY DOLLARS.”
