The US Mint first struck them in 1840 with a gold content of .1209 oz, designed for regular circulation with legal tender status and a two-and-a-half-dollar denomination.

The production of the Liberty Head Quarter Eagle continued until 1907.

Many $2.50 Liberty Head Quarter Eagle coins were lost during the economic collapse of the 1930s, similar to other Pre-1933 Gold Coins. Due to rising gold prices, these coins were hoarded and melted, enhancing their historical and numismatic value.

The Design

On the obverse, Lady Liberty is shown in profile with a coronet inscribed “LIBERTY,” surrounded by thirteen stars representing the original colonies. The year of mintage is at the bottom rim.

The reverse features a Heraldic Eagle with spread wings, a national shield on its chest, arrows in its talons, and a banner with “IN GOD WE TRUST” in its beak. “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” arches above the eagle.
