1899 $5 Liberty Half Eagle Gold Coin BU - Hoard From Original Bag

The Liberty Head Half Eagle - $5 denomination was a US circulating gold coin issued by the US Mint from 1839 to 1908.

Like most Pre-1933 Gold Coins, many $5 Liberty Half Eagle Gold Coins were subject to confiscation and melting due to Executive Order 6102 in 1933 in an attempt to contain the economic collapse of 1929.

However, this recently discovered hoard of Brilliant Uncirculated 1899 $5 Liberty Half Eagles survived the Federal Government's purge! Found stashed away in a bank vault, this original bag has sat unopened since 1899. The coins were struck by the US Mint in 1899, placed into the original bag, and have not seen the light of day until now!

The Design

Christian Gobrecht, the third chief engraver of the US Mint, created the Liberty Head Half Eagle design.

On the obverse, Lady Liberty is depicted with a left-profile bust wearing a tiara engraved with the word “LIBERTY.” She is surrounded by thirteen six-pointed stars referring to the Thirteen Original Colonies. The year of mintage is at the bottom rim.

The Heraldic Eagle, featured on the reverse, has spread wings and the national shield in front of its chest. It carries arrows and olive branches in its talons, symbolizing the duality of America’s everlasting desire for peace but constant readiness for war. Above the Eagle’s head is a banner with the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST.” The inscriptions surrounding the outer rim read “UNITED STATES OF A MERICA” and “FIVE D.”
