1898-S NGC MS-63 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin

The Liberty Double Eagle was the US's official $20 circulating coin from 1850 to 1907, containing .9675 oz of gold.

The design stamped on these coins is signed by James B. Longacre, the fourth Chief Engraver of the US Mint, and showcases the most iconic figures of American coinage: Lady Liberty and the Heraldic Eagle.

The $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coins issued in the San Francisco Mint, one of the US Mint branches, carry the “S” mint mark.

The Design

On the obverse, Lady Liberty is depicted wearing a tiara inscribed with "LIBERTY." Surrounding her image are thirteen six-pointed stars, symbolizing the original Thirteen Colonies, with the year of mintage engraved at the bottom.

The reverse showcases a Heraldic Eagle with outstretched wings, clutching arrows in its talons, and bearing the national shield on its chest. A banner with "E PLURIBUS UNUM" is held in its beak. 

The design also includes the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," the motto "IN GOD WE TRUST," the "S" mint mark below the shield, and the coin's face value of "TWENTY DOLLARS" at the bottom.
