1897 NGC MS-62 $10 Liberty Eagle Gold Coin 

Liberty Eagle Gold Coins were the official USD 10 coin from 1838 until they were replaced by the Indian Head Gold Coin in 1907.

Because of their .4837 oz of gold content, the $10 Liberty Eagle and several other Pre-1933 Gold Coins were confiscated, hoarded, and melted down when gold prices rose during the economic collapse of 1929, severely reducing their availability in the market.

The Design

The third US Mint Chief Engraver, Christian Gobrecht, was responsible for the coin’s design, which featured Lady Liberty and the Heraldic Eagle. Hence, the coin’s moniker.

The obverse showcases Lady Liberty wearing a coronet inscribed “LIBERTY.” Her portrait is surrounded by thirteen stars, symbolizing the Thirteen Original Colonies and the year of mintage.

The reverse features the Heraldic Eagle with the national shield on its chest, holding arrows and oak branches in its talons, and the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” inscribed on a banner above the eagle. 

The inscription “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and the coin's face value marked as “TEN D” complete the image.
