1895 NGC MS-62 $10 Liberty Eagle Gold Coin

The US Mint produced Liberty Eagle gold coins from 1838 to 1907 as the official $10 circulation currency in the US. 

These coins contain .4837 oz of actual gold and feature a design by the third US Mint Chief Engraver, Christian Gobrecht. 

Similar to other Pre-1933 Gold Coins, Liberty Eagle Gold Coins were heavily targeted during the economic collapse of 1929. Due to the rise in gold prices, many of these coins were confiscated, hoarded, and melted down, severely reducing their surviving population.

The Design

Christian Gobrecht designed Lady Liberty and the Heraldic Eagle on the $10 coin design. Hence, the coin’s moniker.

The obverse features Lady Liberty wearing a coronet inscribed “LIBERTY.” Her portrait is surrounded by thirteen stars, symbolizing the Thirteen Original Colonies and the year of mintage.

The reverse displays the Heraldic Eagle with the national shield on its chest, holding arrows and oak branches in its talons, and the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” inscribed on a banner above the eagle. 

It also includes the inscription “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and the coin's face value marked as “TEN D.”

Like other third-party services, NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Company) works independently of sovereign mints, evaluating and attributing grades to coins and numismatic items using the Sheldon Grading Scale as a parameter.

MS or Mint State designates a coin in the format of a business circulation coin. Grade 62 suggests that the coin may present marks and hairlines in focal areas but with an acceptable overall appearance.
