1894 NGC MS-62 $10 Liberty Eagle Gold Coin

From 1838 to 1907, Liberty Eagle gold coins were the United States’ official $10 circulation coin until they were replaced by the $10 Indian Head Gold Coin.

The US Mint crafted Liberty Eagle Gold Coins containing .4837 oz of actual gold, legal tender status, and a design envisioned by Christian Gobrecht, third US Mint Chief Engraver.

The Design

Christian Gobrecht designed Lady Liberty and the Heraldic Eagle on the $10 coin design. Hence, the coin’s moniker.

On the obverse, Lady Liberty wears a coronet engraved with the word “LIBERTY.” Her effigy also contains Thirteen stars, representing the Thirteen Original Colonies and the year of mintage.

On the reverse, the Heraldic Eagle was depicted with the national shield on its chest, arrows and oak branches on its talons, and the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” inscribed on a banner above the eagle. 

It includes the engraving “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and the coin’s face value inscribed as “TEN D.”
