The Design

On the obverse, Lady Liberty’s effigy is adorned with a coronet inscribed “LIBERTY.” The thirteen stars encircling her left-profile bust represent the Thirteen Original Colonies, and the year of mintage is engraved at the bottom.

The reverse features the Heraldic Eagle, with the national shield on its chest, olive branches and arrows in its talons, and the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” on a banner above its head.
