1893 NGC MS-63 $5 Liberty Half Eagle Gold Coin - Texas Bank Hoard From Original Bag

Hidden away for over a century, a pristine group of gold 1893 $5 Liberty Half Eagles sat untouched and unknown to collectors. An astute bank employee had accumulated a vast collection of choice and interesting coins over decades of hard work and had carefully stashed them away. It was not until years later that his family uncovered these massive holdings and went to sell, discovering the immense value of his treasure.

Chief among this find was an original bag of 1893 $5 Gold Liberty Half Eagles. Struck over 130 years ago, these brilliant examples never circulated and were forgotten to time. Thanks to this recent discovery, these historic coins are now available to collectors for the first time.

Certified by NGC with the exclusive “Texas Hoards” label, these Texas Bank Hoard coins are the first of several upcoming hoards of vintage coins that have only recently come to light in the great State of Texas. Don’t miss this opportunity to add this piece of numismatic and Texas history to your very own collection!

From 1839 to 1908, the U.S. Mint minted Liberty Half Eagles to be used as $5 circulation coins in the U.S. These coins contain 0.2419 oz of actual gold content using Christian Gobrecht’s timless Liberty design.

Pre-1933 Gold Coins, including the $5 Liberty Half Eagle Gold Coins, were targeted because of their gold content. Following the 1929 economic collapse, gold coins were confiscated, hoarded, and melted down, decreasing their availability in the numismatic market.

This 1893 $5 Liberty Half Eagles hoard escaped the federal government's purge. They have now been submitted to NGC and graded MS-63.

At SD Bullion, you can find 1893 $5 Liberty Half Eagle Gold Coins, graded as MS-63 and sealed with the NGC Texas Hoards Label.

The reverse displays the Heraldic Eagle, with the national shield stamped on its chest, olive branches and arrows in its talons, and the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” on a banner above its head.

The inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “FIVE D.”, which refer to the coin’s face value, are included.

The Texas Bank Hoard

One of the many exciting aspects of collecting coins is participating in new collections and hoards that are recently discovered and offered on the market. These collections can be in the form of excavations with massive hoards of ancient coins from the ancient world. Every now and then we learn of shipwreck treasures that are recovered from the ocean floor. Collections and hoards also appear from families that have amassed significant holdings spanning decades or even a century by multiple generations. When these coins come to market, it’s exciting for numismatists and the marketplace is intrigued and anxious to get the details of the discovery. Collectors love the details of the finds and clamor to add these new discoveries to their own collections.

Many of the coins from the Texas Hoards were assembled by several entities - An Oil Baron with great generational wealth, another assembled by an astute Bank Teller that over decades, hand selected many great coins, and another thrilling collection that is soon to be revealed.

The Texas Hoards are new to the market and they are an exceptional offering of vintage gold and silver coins from the U.S. and around the world that have been hidden away for decades. Many of the coins were collected from the 1950's to the early 1980's when precious metals traded for a tiny fraction of today’s values. Although the contents of the entire collection are not yet fully known, some of the best coins are being made available now.

Amongst the contents of the vaults was an original bag, assembled over a century ago that contained just over 200 gleaming gold half eagle ($5.00) coins bearing the same date - 1893. These Philadelphia minted gold coins appear as if they were struck just yesterday and are all in flashy Mint State condition. There are absolutely no signs of wear and the strike of each coin is sharp and crisp. It boggles the mind that each piece is over 130 years old.

The lower denomination gold coins were the workhorses of commerce throughout the 19th and early 20th century. When you compare the rarity of these coins to the massive double eagles, you will note that the half eagles have much lower survival rates in high grades. The huge double eagles would wear out pockets, but the smaller denomination gold coins were the ones that were used often in commerce. Recent population reports indicate that half eagles have far greater rarity in high grade than double eagles.
