1881 NGC XF-45 $5 Liberty Head Gold Half Eagle Coin
The 1881 $5 Liberty Head Gold Half Eagle Coin, graded as Extremely Fine (XF-45) by NGC, holds significant numismatic value.
The US Mint first struck these coins with a gold content of .2419 oz, intended for regular circulation as legal tender with a five-dollar denomination.
The Liberty Head Gold Half Eagle coins were produced by the US Mint until 1908.
Many $5 Liberty Head Gold Half Eagle coins were lost during the economic upheavals of the 1930s, similar to other Pre-1933 Gold Coins. Due to rising gold prices, these coins were often melted down, increasing their historical and numismatic value.
Today, SD Bullion offers the 1881 NGC XF-45 $5 Liberty Head Gold Half Eagle Coin, encapsulated and graded by NGC.

The Design
On the obverse, Lady Liberty is depicted in left-facing profile wearing a coronet inscribed with “LIBERTY” and surrounded by thirteen stars representing the original colonies. The year of mintage is located at the bottom rim.
The reverse features a Heraldic Eagle with spread wings, holding arrows and an olive branch, with a shield on its chest. The motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” is inscribed on a banner above the eagle, and “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” arches around the eagle.
A NGC XF-45 Coin
NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Corporation) is a reputable third-party coin grading company that uses a precise grading scale to evaluate coin condition.
XF stands for Extremely Fine, indicating that the coin shows light wear on the highest points and some of the original mint luster may be present.
The coins in this listing have been graded XF-45 by NGC and are housed in protective plastic slabs. These slabs may exhibit light wear, but this does not affect the coin's grade or value.
