1879-S PCGS AU-58 $5 Liberty Half Eagle Gold Coin

The US Mint crafted the Liberty Half Eagle Gold Coin as the official $5 circulation coin from 1839 to 1908. Besides a remarkable design signed by Christian Gobrecht, these coins contain .2419 Troy oz of gold bullion.

Due to their gold content, many $5 Liberty Half Eagle Gold Coins, like most Pre-1933 Gold Coins, were confiscated, hoarded, and melted down after the 1929 economic collapse.

Some of those surviving coins are imprinted with the “S” mint mark, indicating they were issued in the San Francisco Mint.

The Design

On the obverse, Lady Liberty is portrayed in a left-profile bust, wearing a coronet engraved with the word “LIBERTY.” The thirteen stars surrounding her bust represent the Thirteen Original Colonies, and the year of mintage is at the bottom rim.

The Heraldic Eagle depicted on the reverse has the national shield on its chest, olive branches and arrows in its talons, and the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” written on a banner, which appears above its head.

The image also features the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “FIVE D.”, which refers to the coin’s face value.
